This is a rare 100 Hwan coin from 4292 in the Korean calendar (1959 AD).

This coin is exceptionally rare as it was only issued for one year, representing a piece of history from the turbulent currency reform period around the Korean War in the 1950s.

The Hwan (圜) currency served as a crucial transitional unit between the old 'Won' during the Japanese colonial era and the Korean War, and the establishment of the current 'Won' system in 1962, which involved a 1000:1 currency reform.

After the first Hwan banknotes were issued in 1953, 100 Hwan coins were minted in 1959 alongside 10 Hwan and 50 Hwan coins. Unlike the 10 Hwan and 50 Hwan coins, which circulated concurrently at a rate of 10 Hwan = 1 Won until 1975, the 100 Hwan coins were largely recalled under Park Chung-hee's currency reform measures and were used as material for the new 10 Won 'Dabota' coin. This is why the 100 Hwan coin holds significantly higher collector value compared to the 10 Hwan and 50 Hwan coins of the same year.

발행이 단 한 해밖에 이루어지지 않은 희귀한 주화로 1950년대 전후(戰後) 혼란했던 화폐 개혁 시기 역사가 담긴 주화입니다.

환(圜)권은 일제강점기 ~ 한국전쟁 시기 구 '원'에서 1962년 현행 '원' 체계가 정립되기 위해 1000대 1 화폐 개혁이 진행되는 과정에서 중요한 교량 역할을 한 단위였습니다.

1953년 첫 환(圜)권 지폐가 나온 후, 1959년에 10환, 50환과 함께 100환 동전이 발행되었으나 1975년까지 10환 = 1원의 단위로 병행 유통된 10환, 50환과 달리 박정희 정권의 화폐 개혁 조치로 100환만큼은 대부분이 회수되어 新 다보탑 10원의 재료로 쓰였습니다. 100환이 동년의 10환, 50환에 비해 소장가치가 매우 높아진 이유입니다.
