[BUNJANG] Antique Korean Silver Hairpin (Binyer) with Double-Sided Butterfly and Bat Motifs / 골동] 양면 나비와 박쥐의 길상 문양: 세공 은제 비녀입나다
This is a magnificent, large-scale traditional Korean hairpin (Binyer), meticulously crafted with filigree (silver wire) techniques, estimated to be from the late Joseon Dynasty to the Japanese colonial period.
### Auspicious Motifs: Butterflies and Bats
The hairpin features intricate silverwork, where fine silver threads are hammered and twisted to create delicate patterns of butterflies and flowers. This exquisite detail was used to adorn traditional Korean wedding attire and hanbok, serving both to elegantly secure the hair and enhance the wearer's beauty.
The design masterfully incorporates symbols of good fortune: butterflies, representing wealth and harmony, and bats, symbolizing the 'Five Blessings' (오복 - obok), also known as 'Pyeonbok' (편복) in this context.
### Exquisite Double-Sided Filigree
Both sides of this large hairpin are equally adorned with a flawless, thin silver wire filigree technique, complemented by minute granulation. Despite its impressive size, the hollow construction typical of filigree work makes it surprisingly light, indicating the immense skill and labor of the artisan and its origin as a high-status item.
### Material Consideration
While no specific purity markings were found, the distinct difference in texture and weight between the detailed upper ornamentation (bats and butterflies) and the lower shaft (daedae) suggests a potential combination of silver with other metals like German silver. Given the nature of antique items, collectors sensitive to material composition are advised to carefully review all photographic details.
### Authentic Patina of Age
This piece has not undergone artificial cleaning, preserving the natural patina and depth that comes with age. It is presented in its original condition, honoring the value inherent in antique artifacts.
