This illustration captures the appearance of the Korean Pavilion constructed for the Paris Exposition, held in April 1900. While aiming to represent Korean life with elements like the Taegeukgi (Korean flag) and men carrying 'jige' (traditional A-frame carrier), the depiction includes elements like cloth carp and Japanese umbrellas, leading to some confusion with Japanese cultural artifacts.

＜파리 만국 박람회 한국관＞
1900년 4월 개최된 파리 만국 박람회에 세웠던 한국관의 모습으로, 프랑스의 주간 화보지 『르 쁘띠 주르날(Le Petiti Journal)』에 실린 화보이다. 태극기, 지게꾼 등을 그려 한국인의 모습을 담으려 하였으나 헝겊 잉어, 일본식 우산 등도 그려 일본 풍물과 혼동한 모습이다. 이 박람회에서 조선은 세계와 만나면서 동시에 자신을 객관화시켜 보는 계기를 맞았다.

당시 파리 만국박람회를 소개했던 잡지와 신문기사, 공식 소개 책자를 보면 한국 전시관은 어려운

여건에도 불구하고 기대했던 것보다 높은 평가를 받았던 것 같다. “한국정부 대표단은 쉬프렌 대로

에 극동의 모습을 가장 잘 살린 우아하고 독창적인 건축물을 세웠다.”


“320제곱미터에 이르는 건물은 화려한 색을 칠한 목조건물로 넓은 기와지붕을 이었고 골조는 금빛

으로 빛난다. 위로 치솟은 처마 끝은 이곳의 독특한 건축양식을 보여준다. 입구는 서울의 주택 문을

재현했다. 내부는 서울의 황제가 기거하는 옛궁의 알현실(경복궁 근정전)을 본떴다.”
