**Synopsis:**

On a train journey from Bombay to Chandrapore in India, Mrs. Moore (Peggy Ashcroft), an Englishwoman, is joined by her son Ronny Heaslop (Nigel Havers), a British magistrate stationed in India. Also present is Ronny's fiancée, Adela (Judy Davis). After being met by Ronny at the station, they settle into quarters reserved for the British. Mrs. Moore, finding the rigid English lifestyle in India tiresome, befriends an Indian doctor, Aziz (Victor Banerjee). In gratitude for Adela's kindness towards Indians, Aziz invites her to visit the famous Marabar Caves. Ronny, upon learning of this, accuses Aziz. Despite Adela's testimony, Aziz is acquitted. During this process, Adela becomes disillusioned with her fiancé Ronny's racism and realizes their union cannot happen.

인도의 봄베이에서 챤드라보아로 향하는 기차안, 거기에는 인도에서 치안 판사로 있는 영국인 로니(Ronny Heaslop: 니젤 하베스 분)를 만나기 위해 런던에서 건너온 그의 어머니 미세스 모아(Mrs. Moore: 페기 애쉬크로프트 분)와 로니의 약혼녀 아데라(Adela Quested: 쥬디 데이비스 분)가 타고 있었다. 역에서 로니의 마중을 받은 두 사람은 영국인 전용 관저에 짐을 풀게 되고 판에 박은 듯한 인도 생활에 염증을 느낀 미세스 모아는 인도인 아지즈(Doctor Aziz: 빅터 바네예 분)를 사귀게 되고 아데라의 인도인에 대한 호의에 감사의 표시로 아지즈는 그녀를 유명한 유적 마라바 동굴 여행에 초청하게 된다. 로니는 이 사실을 알고 아지즈를 고발하는데, 아데라의 증언으로 아지즈는 무죄 판결을 받게 된다. 이런 과정에서 아데라는 그녀의 약혼자 로니의 인종차별에 염증을 느끼게 되고 결국 그와의 결합은 이루어질 수 없음을 깨닫게 된다.
