About the Artist:
John William Lewin (1770–1819) was a British natural history illustrator and the first professional artist in the colony of New South Wales, Australia. His "Kingfisher" works typically depict the Azure Kingfisher, featured in his seminal natural history book "Birds of New South Wales with their Natural History" (1813) and its subsequent editions. This etching meticulously portrays the vibrant blue and orange plumage and the natural posture of the kingfisher, representing a significant scientific record of indigenous Australian birds from that era.
