### Historical Significance

This coin was minted during the reign of the Xianfeng Emperor (1851-1861), the ninth emperor of the Qing Dynasty. Amidst the Taiping Rebellion, supply lines from major copper-producing regions like Yunnan were disrupted, and military expenditure surged. To overcome this financial crisis, the Qing government issued high-denomination coins known as 'Daqian' (大錢).

Specifically, the 'Xianfeng Zhongbao Dang Shi Qian' (咸豐重寶 當十錢) was issued with a nominal value equivalent to ten ordinary copper coins. This coin serves as a significant economic artifact, illustrating the hyperinflation and collapse of the monetary system in the late Qing period.
